The kidneys

The kidneys are two very important organs in the shape of beans. They are placed below the rib cage on both sides of the spine in the middle of the back and they are of dark red color. It is characteristic that they do not lie in the same plain, but left kidney is a little higher that the right one. The kidney along with the bladder, two ureters and a urethra form the urinary system. A transparent and fibrous membrane covers the kidney and protects them from certain infections and injuries. This membrane is known under the name renal capsule. The kidneys are full of nephrons, which have the role to filter the blood and cause waste to be ejected from the body in the form of urine.

Kidney disease may be caused by diabetes and hypertension. It is very important to go on regular checkups of the blood sugar, the blood pressure and urine tests in order to prevent the developing of the kidney diseases. Furthermore, a healthy diet, regular physical activity and quitting of smoking are some of the things that a person alone can do for his/her kidneys health.

There are several kidney diseases, such as polycystic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, lupus nephritis and diabetic nephropathy, as well as glomerulonephritis and renal tubular acidosis. Kidney stone is the name for the mass in the shape of hard stone, which is formed from crystals in the kidneys. Acute renal failure is the condition when the kidneys stop to function, while chronic renal failure is a disorder marked by gradual declining of the kidneys.

Each type of kidney disease requires specific and different treatment. Usually medical treatment is consisted of taking certain medications, such as antibiotics and steroids. There is a possibility of the further damage of the kidneys in the case if a person has the high blood pressure and diabetes. Therefore, these two conditions must be controlled regularly.
