Progesterone is an essential hormone in pregnancy, and one that serves many purposes. Did you have any idea that progesterone is also responsible for slowing down the processes in your digestive tract? That's right progesterone makes you constipated! Constipation is a very common problem in pregnancy. The chances are that it will happen to you as well, at some point during your pregnancy. Or perhaps it already has.

In any case, here are some suggestions that might help you cure pregnancy constipation.

1) The first thing to know about constipation is that it is exacerbated by dehydration. Because women need more fluids during pregnancy, and also because pregnancy nausea can make them lose fluids more rapidly, staying hydrated in pregnancy is essential. Make sure you always have access to water or tea. Drink flavored water if you prefer that. Staying hydrated is important for everyone, but it might just ease your constipation as well.

2) Foods that are rich in fibers contribute to the smooth functioning of your digestive system. Whole grain bread or brown rice, and breakfast cereals, can help you cure your constipation. Some fruits and vegetables are great for this as well.

3) Exercising during pregnancy keeps you healthy, and can cure constipation too! Swimming, walking, and cycling are some great forms of working out while you are expecting a baby.

4) Natural laxatives such as plum juice can help you go to the bathroom when other methods have not worked for you. You should not be using these too often though, and make sure to tell your doctor or midwife about your battle with constipation as well. They might have other suggestions for you.
