Women in their twenties usually feel like life is only starting and like everything is possible, which is true, but sometimes this disposition can have consequences later in life, especially when it comes to health. The twenties are the age in which what people do and how they take care of themselves determines greatly how their life will be later.

Not many women in their twenties dwell upon the possible consequences to their long-term health and well-being as much as they worry if they are going to be able to fit into those skinny jeans.

Another common mistake is to think that there will always be time to start taking care of one's self.

There are some things that every woman in her twenties should do now in order to assure a long, healthy and accomplished life later on.

Exercise

Having a regular exercise routine that is challenging, fun and healthy is one of the most important things. Some women like going to the gym, others prefer yoga. Kayaking, dancing, jogging, swimming, tai-chi, it doesn’t matter, as long as it is stimulating, and motivating. Exercise is important because it reduces the risk of some diseases, protects bones and joints, which will be particularly important later in life, and, of course, helps develop a strong and good-looking body.

Healthy eating

Unfortunately, many women in their twenties worry more about their weight than about nutritional and health properties of the food they eat. At this age, the food should be based on whole grains, fruit and vegetables.

Many problems that may affect women later in life can be prevented by a healthy diet early on. For example, it is important to include enough sources of calcium in order to prevent osteoporosis during menopause. Calcium can be found in dairy products like milk, yogurt, cheese but also in green vegetables like spinach, kale and broccoli.

Because vitamin D is important for absorption and metabolism of calcium, it should be added as a supplement or by taking walks in the sun regularly.

Skin protection

Taking care of the skin should start in one’s twenties and it does not mean just using quality products like lotions, creams and cleansers. Skin health depends on what a person eats, what their habits are, how active they are and how healthy the environment is. A diet rich in vitamins and minerals, a good sunscreen and plenty of fluids for the base for a healthy and good-looking skin.

Rest and stress reduction

Not getting enough sleep might not seem like a dangerous thing but in fact it may interfere with memory and cognitive processes, with the way the body manages stress and it’s ability to fight infections and heal.

Many women in their twenties are exposed to significant amounts of stress, for example in college, starting a new job or a new relationship. Stress can affect the health and should be reduced by using techniques of relaxation like diaphragm breathing, meditation, aromatherapy, yoga and similar.
