We all know how itching can be unpleasant when it appears occasionally, but when it becomes persistent, it can be even frustrating, especially when it occurs in particular parts of the body like the groin.

The medical name for the groin itch is tinea cruris, while it is widely known as jock itch and groin ringworm. One develops this skin when the fungi invade his/her skin. The Dermatophytes are the fungi that are responsible for the occurrence of the skin fungal infection and these fungi can be of different types. The areas that are warm and damp are the most suitable for the overgrowth of the fungi and therefore, the groin is the perfect place for them. When the fungal infection occurs in the groin area, it causes itching, which is contagious and can be transferred to some other person very easily.

Causes of groin itch

Jock itch may be induced by the skin disorder called Lichen simplex chronicus, which is marked by chronic itching and scratching due to stress, dryness of the skin and insect bites. Another skin disease responsible for the groin itch is eczema and it occurs due to various irritants and stress, as well as due to temperature fluctuations. The main symptoms of this type of the skin inflammation are itching, scaly-look and thickening of the skin.

Pubic lice may also cause groin itch and these tiny organisms may infest the pubic hair, as well as the armpit hair and eyebrows. The pubic lice is usually seen in adolescents since they may be spread through sexual relations, but a person can become infected by pubic lice by using the same toilet or blankets as the infected person.

Symptoms of groin itch

Groin itch may be accompanied by some other symptoms, especially when the infection is severe. The person with jock itch may notice the appearance of red rash, usually in circular shape with elevated edges or scaly patches with blisters. Burning sensation and skin peeling and cracking are also some of the symptoms that may appear together with groin itch when the severe groin infections occur.

If the groin itch lasts more than two weeks, a medical help should be sought since the doctor should prescribe some antifungal medicines and antifungal creams. However, the person with the groin infection which usually recurs should keep the groin area always clean and dry, and he or she should not wear tight clothes.
