Facial redness and rosacea

The facial redness is mainly caused by the skin disease called rosacea, which causes certain changes in the appearance of the skin. Due to this disease, the skin turns red, which usually first starts in the nose area and then gradually expands to the cheeks, forehead and chin. Furthermore, this disease is responsible for the expansion of the blood vessels which are in the inner skin layers, so they become evident on the outer skin layer. Apart from the visible blood vessels, the red bumps break out and the skin becomes inflamed and very sensitive. The inflammation and burning sensation in the affected area are likely to become worse without a proper treatment.

Facial redness treatment options

If the facial flushing is induced by rosacea, topical ointments are usually employed in the treatment. These ointments are basically antibiotics that reduce the inflammation of the skin. The most popular creams for treating facial redness are metronidazole and benzoyl peroxide. Tretinoin and Azelaic acid are also widely used to relieve the symptoms of the rosacea, including the facial blushing. When these topical creams seem to be ineffective, then doctors prescribe oral medication, such as antibiotics tetracycline, erythromycin and minocycline. However, in cases where neither oral medicines, nor topical ointments can reduce facial redness for a specific period of time, a surgery is the only solution left. The surgery for the removal of the permanent facial flushing can be quite useful when it is induced by rosacea.

The laser surgery for the treatment of facial redness is a procedure that uses the intense beams of light which penetrate the superficial layer of the skin and reach the expanded blood vessels. By means of the heat, the visible blood vessels are ruptured and facial redness is thus reduced. The broken blood vessels cannot transport the blood properly and because of that, they cannot expand anymore. The healthy blood vessels then replace the ruptured blood vessels.

Dermabrasion is a procedure which is employed when the skin on the nose is thick and when the bumps appear on this area. By means of a Dermatone, a dermatologist removes the affected layer of the skin in order to remove the bumps and reduce the inflammation. Bleeding may occur but is can be easily healed. Cryosurgery is a procedure to reduce rosacea inflammation where the skin is froze by the means of liquid nitrogen. When the inflamed tissue is destroyed, it is removed manually.
