Dry skin is a common skin type, along with oily, sensitive and combination skin. Of course, there are people who have the so-called “normal skin type”, but it is not very common.

Dry skin on the face

Even people who have other skin types occasionally suffer from dry skin, especially on the face and hands. That is because face and hands are almost always exposed. The skin of the face can suffer from too much direct sunlight, from wind, cold, make-up, harsh soaps, medications, smoking, alcohol abuse and many more. It becomes dry when there is not enough sebum secreted to lubricate it and protect it and when the skin does not get enough moisture from the inside as well as from the outside. When this happens, the skin becomes dry, rough, dull, flaky and it feels tight and uncomfortable.

Dry skin solutions for the face

The first step in overcoming the problem of dry skin of the face is to protect the skin from whatever is making it dry. During winter, it is recommended to use a heavier moisturizer, one that is oil-based, and to apply every time before leaving the house. Scarves, hats and sunglasses also help, especially if the weather is windy.

In the summertime, when the skin is exposed to stronger UV radiation from the sun than in the other seasons, it is very important to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and to always use sunscreen. People who have pale skin should use sunscreen with a higher SPF. Another useful solution for women tinted foundations with sunscreen components.

Dry skin responds better to natural solutions than to chemical ones. Fortunately, the nature offers a lot of highly beneficial products, like aloe vera, olive oil and jojoba oil. Most of those products are very mild and completely safe.

Dietary changes are also important. The skin needs vitamins and minerals, and it also needs essential oils, like those that can be found in fatty fish.

Another essential step in overcoming dry skin of the face is drinking plenty of fluids. Water works best but green tea and freshly squeezed fruit juices are also beneficial.

There are also remedies that can make dry skin more subtle and smooth. For example, an amazing facial mask for dry skin can be made by mixing one teaspoon of honey, one teaspoon of olive oil, one egg and just a few drops of rose water. Another mask combines two teaspoons of fresh milk cream with two tablespoons of rose water or honey.
