Dry skin is a common skin type that requires special attention. It is always recommended to choose makeup and cosmetic products according to the skin type. Inadequate makeup products can actually aggravate the problem instead of concealing it or fixing it.

There are many factors that contribute to dry skin. Some of them cannot be avoided but makeup, lotions, cleansers and soaps can definitely be adjusted to this skin type.

Before and after makeup

Most types of makeup can actually worsen the problem of dry skin and it is therefore important to choose it wisely. In addition, it is necessary to prepare the skin well before applying makeup.

The main problem with dry skin is the lack of moisture. The skin is not properly hydrated, both from the inside and from the outside, and because of that if feels tight, rough and flaky. This means that extra moisture must be provided in form of moisturizing creams and lotions, designed especially for dry skin type.

Moisturizers should be applied at least two times a day- in the morning and in the evening. Applying these creams before makeup will reduce the familiar feeling of tightness and discomfort that most people with dry skin associate with makeup. The moisturizer should be water-based and oil free, because oil clogs the pores.

In the evening, before bedtime, it is necessary to carefully remove all the makeup, using a special makeup remover instead of harsh soaps.

Exfoliation is also very beneficial for the dry skin. It removes dead skin cells so moisturizers can penetrate into deeper layers of the dermis. It is recommended to exfoliate once or twice per week.

Choosing the makeup

Before applying the foundation, it is advised to put on a primer formulated especially for the dry skin, spreading it evenly, outwards from the center of the face. It is best to use liquid foundation, with a small amount of oil to it so it can retain the moisture throughout the day. Silicone-based and light-reflecting ones are also recommended. Tinted moisturizer is a great solution for dry skin during the summer.

As for the concealers, liquid and cream ones are better from dry skin because they do not accentuate the flaky parts of the face. Concealers should be one shade lighter than the foundation. Blush should be creamy, not in form of powder or gel.

Persons who have dry skin also tend to have dry and chapped lips. In order to prevent cracks and chapped appearance, it is necessary to use a good Moisturizing lip balm or salve on a regular basis, not just in the winter. During summer, lip balms should contain sunscreen agents with medium to high SPF. It is best to use moisturizing lipstick or lip gloss and to always put on the lip balm before applying the lipstick.
