Bleeding Gums and Causes
Bleeding from gums is a sign of gum disease or it may be a feature of some more serious medical condition which is the case if bleeding tends to persist.
Some people simply do not brush their teeth or floss them properly. If these activities are performed vigorously and in an inappropriate manner the gums can be damaged and bleed. Consultation with a dentist is the best thing one can do to prevent bleeding caused by an inadequate brushing and flossing.
One more cause of bleeding gums is the accumulation of plaque at the gum line. Plaque is highly suitable for gingivitis, inflammation of the gums. If left untreated plaque progresses into tartar and the presence of these two may eventually cause periodontitis and subsequent complications. In people suffering from periodontitis gums are very susceptible to bleeding.
Apart from the previously mentioned gum bleeding occurs in people suffering from bleeding disorders, hormonal changes (pregnancy), idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, ill-fitting dentures, tooth or gum related infections, leukemia, scurvy and people who use blood thinners or are suffering from vitamin K deficiency.
What are Bleeding Gums Treatments?
The first thing a person is supposed to do if he/ she notices bleeding from gums is to consult a dentist. The dentist will examine the entire oral cavity, teeth and gums. If there are certain conditions such as inflammation of the gums or plaque or tartar the dentist recommends the most optimal treatment. Plaque and tartar are removed while gingivitis requires more complex treatment.
In case bleeding from the gums occurs due to improper brushing teeth and flossing, the dentist will explain the patients how to perform these activities adequately.
A person should also pay attention on what he/she eats. Dietary changes must include healthy foods such as fruits, leafy vegetables and whole grains. On the other hand, sugars and saturated fats are supposed to be expelled from the diet. Bleeding gums can develop as a consequence of vitamin C deficiency. This is why diet must also include foods rich in vitamin C. Even vitamin C supplements can be taken.
There are certain herbs that can be used in case of bleeding gums. For example the leaf of the Neem seed possesses excellent anti-bacterial properties. Furthermore, one more effective remedy is tea tree oil. Both of the previously mentioned can be used together with a toothpaste. Natural mouthwash can be made of several more herbs such as geranium, lemon tree oil or tea tree oil.
