Gingivitis prevention and cure

Gingivitis Overview

Gingivitis is a periodontal disease characterized by bleeding and inflammation of gums. Gingivitis is caused by accumulation of plaque or tartar at the base of teeth. Untreated gingivitis may lead to the teeth decay.

Many people have experienced bleeding gums sometimes in their life. It is actually quite common in pregnancy because of hormonal changes. Also, because of hormonal changes in adolescence gingivitis may occur in some individuals. However, poor dental hygiene is generally responsible for development of gingivitis and easy cure for it is brushing teeth twice a day. Food particles and plaque, which is made of bacteria, turn into tartar if not regularly removed from teeth. This leads to irritation and inflammation of the gums and when we brush the teeth the gums are bleeding. However, gingivitis may be caused by injury to the gums such as overly energetic brushing or flossing of the teeth. Apart from the bleeding gums, symptoms of gingivitis are gums tender to touch, swollen gums, bad breath and change in color of the gums.

Gingivitis Prevention

A good oral hygiene is essential in prevention of gingivitis. You should brush your teeth after every meal or at least twice a day because that way major cause, plaque, will be removed. Also you should floss your teeth once each day. Flossing should be done prior to brushing to remove food deposits stuck between the teeth. Mouthwash should be used as well to prevent gingivitis. Take a few minutes for flossing and brushing. When you brush you teeth use a downward motion which is better than circular motion. There are different types of brush available in the market such as hard bristle, medium and soft bristle brush and you should choose the one that suits you the best. Also, there is an electric brush which is believed to be more effective in prevention of gingivitis. There are various anti plaque or anti tartar toothpastes that are recommended for prevention and treating of gum diseases. You may use anti gingivitis mouth rinses that are effective against bad breath. If you regularly maintain oral hygiene your teeth will be protected against gingivitis. Additionally, visit your dentist every 6 months for check up and cleanings.

Gingivitis Cure

For people who are suffering from gingivitis there are some natural cures for this gum disease. You may treat you problem with some home remedies such as tea tree oil or clove oil. These oils can be added on the toothpaste or applied to gums with the help of cotton swab. Aloe vera is another effective cure for gingivitis and it may be used for massaging the gums. Foods rich in vitamin C may also help in treating gingivitis since vitamin C benefits the teeth and the gums.
