In the sea of more or less effective treatments for cellulite, acoustic wave therapy or AWT stands out for its effectiveness with little or no side effects and no pain or discomfort whatsoever.

About cellulite

Cellulite is a very common condition that affects both sexes, although it is much more noticeable in women, who are usually the ones seeking treatment. The connective tissues beneath the skin pull it down, disturbing its structure, which results in wrinkled appearance of the skin called cottage cheese.

Most women have some degree of cellulite, but in some it is more noticeable than in others. This is more of a cosmetic problem than a health issue, which is why there are not too many scientific studies on the subject. However, those that were performed showed that not all fat deposits are cellulite. Cellulite forms only in superficial layers of fat and in specific regions, like buttocks, thighs, belly, legs and upper arms. This superficial layer is more resistant to improvement through exercise, which is why cellulite often needs other, more specific types of treatment.

Acoustic wave therapy

Acoustic wave therapy or AWT is one of the cellulite treatments that has gained much attention recently. This treatment uses high pressure waves that penetrate the dermal layer and impact fibrous hardening of the connective collagen tissues, which is one of the main factors for cellulite. The waves are pointed to certain problematic areas, where they enable the release of the skin, which results in a smoother appearance. They thicken the dermis so the fat deposits cannot protrude and be visible.

There are two types of devices used in AWT. The first one is called the radial type and uses an air chamber to create the acoustic pressure wave. The person undergoing this treatment experiences a feeling of powerful vibrations, which are controlled in order to prevent any pain or discomfort.

The wave breaks up the fat and increases the collagen production, reducing the protrusion of fat. It also increases the blood flow in the targeted region.

The second type of AWT device is called planar head device. It uses an electromagnet instead of an air chamber, and the wave is a high pressure acoustic wave of short duration. This type of wave, like the one used in the first device, is nearly painless and its action is similar. It breaks the fat and increases the production of dermal collagen.

The treatment with either of the devices requires two sessions per week for three weeks. Each session lasts about 30 minutes. As for the prices, they vary depending on the area and the practice that offers this treatment, but generally the sessions cost at least $85.
