White tongue sores

Diseases of the tongue affect many functions, including talking, chewing, swallowing and drinking. White tongue sores might be caused by several reasons, including the leukoplakia, oral lichen planus and infection by Candida.

Leukoplakia

People addicted to tobacco chewing may experience long term irritation of the tongue. This condition is better known as leukoplakia and patients may suffer from excessive growth of the tongue cells. In some cases, the same problem may affect other parts of the mouth. Leukoplakia must be treated, because left unattended it may present the trigger for development of mouth cancer.

Oral Lichen Planus

This autoimmune inflammatory disease is yet another common cause of white sores in the mouth and on the tongue. Severe cases can cause white patches of the lining in the throat or in the esophagus. In most cases, this condition resolves on its own. To speed up the recovery, avoid eating food which irritates your tongue further.

Candidiasis

Oral thrush or candidiasis is fungal infection of the tongue, caused by fungi Candida albicans. Patches on the tongue usually look like cottage cheese and they are frequently present in young children and older people. Patients with dentures, those who have just finished a course of antibiotics and people with weakened immune system are also found to be more prone to this disease.

Prevent White Tongue Sores 

To avoid dealing with white sores in the mouth or on the tongue maintain proper dental hygiene. Brush and floss your teeth every day and visit your dentist regularly, even for a routine check-up. Balanced diet and strong immune system will also attribute to prevention of white sores on the tongue.

Treat White Tongue Sores at Home

Use soft bristle brush to clean the teeth to treat and prevent damage to the tongue if you already have white sores on the tongue. Toothpastes with sodium lauryl sulfate and alcohol are not the best at the moment, because they can worsen your problem.

Don’t chew tobacco and avoid smoking while this condition lasts.

Start boosting up your immune system by eating more proteins, vitamins and minerals every day.

Yogurt is one of the best things that can fight candidiasis. Eat a cup of yogurt every day first thing in the morning. The good bacteria from this dairy product will restore the health of your mouth.

Moist tea bags placed on the tongue sores for a couple of minutes are known as pain relief and you might want to try it out.

Mix the same amount of water and hydrogen peroxide and spread the solution on the tongue sores to ease the problem.

Another home remedy is made of a half a cup of milk of magnesia and the same amount of Benadryl liquid. Swish the mixture for a minute or two in the mouth and spit it out. Some believe it can relieve the pain caused by white sores on the tongue.
