Every year there are a lot of cases of broken hands and it is considered to be a common injury among people. According to certain researches, millions of people suffer from a broken hand every year. People need to know that a hand is a complex part of the human body. People depend a lot on the hands and even a minor loss of function can severely affect a person’s life. A person who has broken his or her arm needs to go to the hospital in order for the doctors to fix it. Most people know that it takes a lot of time and rehabilitation for the hand to heal properly. Not a lot of people know that there are 27 bones that make the hand. In most cases of a broken hand, the cause is a direct blow to it or a fall onto that hand. Certain injuries like fingertip fractures, pinkie and thumb fractures are considered to be common.

Self-care at home

First of all, people need to know that if they experience an injury to the hand, they should first go to the hospital. This need not be done only in cases when the injury is really a minor one and there is no need for any special treatment. However, people need to know that there are some things that they can do before they get to the hospital. For instance, the use of first aid is important in order for the injury not to get any worse. If there is bleeding, a person should place a gauze on it in order to stop the bleeding. In case of broken arm, there is always swelling, so a person should place an ice pack right after the injury in order to lessen it. If there is any jewelry, a person should remove it before the hand becomes too big. In case of obvious deformation, people need to support the injured hand until they get to the hospital. A pillow can be used for this purpose. A person can even take certain medications, like ibuprofen for the pain.

Medical treatment

When a person gets to the hospital, the doctor will firstly order an X-ray. The patient will most likely receive antibiotics in order for any infections to be prevented. In case of cuts, the doctor will close them. In the end, if there is a break, the hand will be immobilized with a splint.
