Breathalizers are devices which are used for measuring alcohol content in a person's body through his/her breath. These devices are widely used in traffic control by police officers and other assigned personnel, making sure that all the participants in traffic are not driving under the influence of it.

For public purposes, fuel cell or infrared breathalizers are used. These are extremely accurate and the models which provide the readings of these devices for public purposes are all accepted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Food and Drug Administration. The Parliament may approve of certain types of breathalizers as well.

As for private, consumer's use, lower quality models are available. These are less expensive and they offer readings and results which may be inaccurate. This is why these devices are often called and classified as “screeners”.

Usage of Breathalizers

Many people are alcoholics. Moreover, this bad habit does not exclude children since there is a large number of juvenile drinkers. Thus, alcohol is abused in schools, at work places and at many other locations where this is forbidden by law. Currently, 129 million Americans age 12 and above drink alcohol.

Subsequently, something this wide-spread needs to be controlled and regulated because, once a person is under the influence of alcohol he/she can do something regrettable or dangerous, without having his/her proper judgment to stop him/her. People get hurt, killed or exposed to other dangerous situations daily, all because of alcohol abuse and the government, schools, offices and many other public institutions need to make sure this is prevented whenever possible.

Who Might Use Breathalizers and Why?

Alcohol breathalizers are often used at people's homes. Namely, many children tend to hide their drinking habits from their parents or caretakers. In order to stay safe and sure, a large number of these people may use breathalizers for checking their children for alcohol abuse.

The same goes for schools, where there have been many cases of drinking reported. Speaking of this type of alcohol abusers, 14.6% or students, age from 12 to 17, were drinking in US schools in 2008. For prevention purposes, many schools use breathalizers for control during important events or school functions.

Companies around the country lose incredible amounts of money each year due to the absence of their workers or their low productivity and other problems, all caused by alcohol abuse. So, in order to ensure productivity and health, many companies use breathalizers.

Finally, these useful devices reach the peak of their performance in traffic alcohol control. These breathalizers are very precise and effective, giving instant results and readings regarding one's blood alcohol levels.

The promptness and usefulness of breathalizers make them present in many aspects of our existence. Unlike urine or blood tests, these devices provide instant insight, right after the person has exhaled into them.
