Information on Vioxx

Vioxx is one of the brand names for a specific type of non steroidal anti inflammatory medicaments called rofecoxib. It has been approved by the FDA but it has been withdrawn since, because it became associated with a rather long list of side effects.

Side Effects of Vioxx

Gastrointestinal side effects of vioxx may or may not include diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, dyspepsia, epigastric discomfort, vomiting, nausea, heartburn, abdominal pain, acid reflux, pancreatitis, aphthous stomatitis, intestinal obstruction, constipation, duodenal ulcer, dental caries, cholecystitis, dental pain, colonic malignant neoplasm, digestive gas symptoms, colitis, dry mouth, oral lesions, duodenal disorder, oral infections, dysgeusia, infectious gastroenteritis, esophagitis, hemorrhoids, gastric disorder, hematochezia and gastritis. General side effects of vioxx include asthenia, tonsillitis, fatigue, tinnitus, dizziness, pharyngitis, influenza, otitis media, lower extremity edema, otitis, sinusitis, otic pain, upper respiratory infections, dry throat, abscesses, epistaxis, chills, cerumen impaction, contusion, viral syndrome, cysts, upper extremity edema, diaphragmatic hernia, traumas, fever, syncopes, fluid retention, peripheral edema, flushing, painful sensations, fungal infections and laceration. Hepatic side effects of vioxx include borderline elevations.

Cardiovascular side effects of vioxx include heart attacks, venous insufficiency, angina pectoris, unstable angina, peripheral vascular events, transient ischemic attack, hypertension, pulmonary embolism, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary edema, bradycardia, myocardial infarction, hematoma, deep venous thrombosis, irregular heart rate, congestive heart failure, palpitations, cerebrovascular accident, tachycardia and premature ventricular contraction.

Ocular side effects of vioxx include blurred vision, conjunctivitis and ocular injection. Metabolic side effects of vioxx include changes in the appetite, weight gain, hypercholesterolemia and hyponatremia. Renal side effects of vioxx may or may not include certain medical conditions such as reduced urine output, reduced serum creatinine levels, renal failure, mitral valve regurgitation, hyperuricemia, acute interstitial nephritis and renal papillary necrosis.

Vioxx can also be associated with different types of insect bite reactions and allergic reactions as well. Dermatologic side effects of vioxx may include a long list of medical conditions and problems such as alopecia, psoriasis, neutrophilic dermatosis, atopic dermatitis, pseudoporphyria, basal cell carcinoma, xerosis, contact dermatitis, urticaria, herpes simplex, skin erythema, herpes zoster, skin rash, nail unit disorder, pruritus and excessive perspiration.

Nervous system side effects of vioxx may include headaches, aseptic meningitis, hypesthesia, vertigo, insomnia, somnolence, median nerve neuropathy, sciatica, paresthesia, migraines and muscular spasms. Psychiatric side effects of vioxx include anxiety, decreased mental acuity and depression. Respiratory side effects of vioxx include bronchitis, nasal congestion, asthma, allergic rhinitis, cough, pharyngitis, dyspnea, laryngitis, pneumonia and pulmonary congestion.

Musculoskeletal side effects of vioxx include back pain, wrist fracture, arm pain, traumatic arthropathy, arthlargia, tendonitis, cartilage trauma, osteoarthritis, joint swelling, myalgia, muscle cramps, musculoskeletal stiffness, muscle weakness and musculoskeletal pain. Genitourinary side effects of vioxx include breast malignant neoplasm, urolithiasis, prostate malignant neoplasm, breast mass, urinary tract infections, vaginitis, cystitis, urinary retention, dysuria, nocturia, menopausal symptoms and menstrual disorder. Hematologic side effects of vioxx include lymphoma.
