Seroxat is a medicine used for the treatment of various psychological problems, but primarily depression. Substance called paroxetine is a very important ingredient of seroxat. Seroxat belongs to a group of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or SSRI.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
Our brain is full of substances that are responsible for normal functioning. Very important substances in our brain are neurotransmitters and their assignment is to transfer information between neurons. There are different neurotransmitters and each of them has its specific function. Serotonin has the function to keep us uplifted and if we don’t have enough serotonin, depression can occur. In those cases, we need SSRIs because they stop serotonin from entering the neurons. That is how every SSRI works and paroxetine does the same to serotonin. Due to that, it can be helpful in treatments of depression, panic attacks, different phobias, OCDs and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The effects of seroxat are not noticeable immediately and you can feel the difference after 14 days to a month. It is important not to stop taking the medicine, even if it looks like your symptoms are worsening. If you notice that you are feeling a lot worse at the beginning of the treatment with seroxat, please contact your doctor. It is best if you take seroxat in the morning, but not on empty stomach.
Warning
There are few things you should know about this medication. Depression can become worse during the first few weeks of the treatment, and if that happens, consult the doctor. Also, be careful while driving or don’t drive at all if you notice that your reactions are slower than before the treatment with seroxat. Try not to consume alcohol during the treatment with seroxat.
Also, you can feel urges to move frequently, but that will probably disappear after a couple of weeks. You may feel sleepy and that is because of hyponatremia, but you should talk to your doctor if you notice this. The treatment with seroxat should be stopped slowly. If you stop the treatment abruptly, you will experience some uncomfortable symptoms like sickness, anxiousness, sleeping disturbances, rapid heartbeats, and others.
Side effects
Seroxat can cause various unwanted effects, but many individuals won’t experience them. However, there are some side effects which are common and those are sickness and problems with libido. Less common are loss of appetite, high cholesterol, drowsiness, sleeping disturbances, problems with sight, emotional disturbance, vertigo and similar. There are side effects that occur extremely rarely and those are delusions, problems of the skin, tachycardia, uneasiness and agitation. There are some other side effects which are not mentioned here, but if you want to find out which are they, please read the leaflet in the medicine package or talk to medical adviser.
