Every person knows that it is highly important that all the proper foods are consumed during a day. This is important so that a person avoids malnutrition. Malnutrition will occur with people who do not consume all the nutrients that their body needs in order to maintain proper health. Even a person who does not consume one food with essential nutrients is in danger of suffering from malnutrition. On the other hand, a person whose diet is not balanced may also end up suffering from malnutrition. For instance, a person who is overweight obviously eats a lot but does not consume healthy foods and may suffer from malnutrition. An improper diet may also cause a certain condition called scurvy.
Who is affected by malnutrition?
According to certain researches, over two million people are affected by malnutrition in the United Kingdom. There are no rules and every person can end up suffering from malnutrition if he or she does not intake all the right foods for a prolonged period of time. However, there are some people who are more prone to malnutrition than others. For instance, elderly people, especially those who are hospitalized. Other people who are more likely to suffer from malnutrition are people with low incomes, people with certain chronic disorders, like anorexia and bulimia, and people who are recovering from a serious illness.
Preventing malnutrition
Healthy and balanced diet
The best way a person can prevent malnutrition from occurring is by consuming all the right foods that provide all the needed nutrients. People know that there are five main groups of food and a person must consume all five. These food groups are carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables, protein, dairy and fats. Apart from the right foods, people also need to remember that drinking enough fluids is just as important. A person should consume at least 1.2 liters of fluid every day.
Stomach conditions and digestive disorders
A person should also know that there are some digestive problems that may cause a person to end up suffering from malnutrition. The main reason why that is so is because a person is unable to properly digest the foods and the body is not able to absorb the nutrients it needs. Some of these digestive problems are ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease and alcoholism. However, people need not worry too much, because there are ways they can treat these problems. Counseling, self-help techniques and the treatment of some other underlying condition are usually applied.
