Peyronie’s disease is the medical term for the condition marked by the appearance of unnatural scar tissue or plaques that occur in tissues inside the penis. The men who suffer from Peyronie’s disease have bent penis while it is in erection. It is a very painful and unpleasant condition and it is very distressful for every man who is affected, because it can cause the man to be unable to have the sexual relations. In the majority of cases, the most effective treatment is the surgery of the curved penis. Thus, the man can have satisfactory sexual intercourse. Non-surgical treatments are not so effective.

Cause of Peyronie’s disease

Although the exact cause for the development of this condition is not established yet, it is assumed that the unhealed wound can cause it. This wound can be very small and can happen during the sexual relation when the penis is bent. This wound can also be induced by, for example, an accident and sports injury.

Symptoms of Peyronie’s disease

Peyronie’s disease has symptoms that may appear suddenly or over a time. One of the most common symptoms of this disease is deformed penis, so thus it may be bent, curved upward or be bent down. There are cases when the penis is curved to one side. Furthermore, it may look like an hourglass with a narrow and tight band that appears around the erect shaft. Men that suffer from Peyronie’s disease may also have penis that in erection bends sharply downward at the base. This penis bending usually becomes worse over time up to 18 months and at that point, it reaches climax and just reappears with every erection. Another discomfortable symptom of this condition is pain in the first 18 months. This pain may occur during every erection or only during an orgasm. Moreover, if the pain appears whenever the penis is touched even if it is not erected, then the man suffers from a condition called flaccid.

One obvious sign of Peyronie’s disease is the forming of the scar tissues called plaques beneath the skin of the penis. The man can feel it as flat lumps or as a band of hard tissue. Moreover, those men who have Peyronie’s disease may experience erectile dysfunction, which is a difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. There are also cases when shortening of penis occurs as a symptom of this disease. If any of these signs are noticed, it is very important to visit a doctor and prevent further aggravation of the disease.
