Controversy
There is anti cholesterol drug which has lately become some sort of a blockbuster and it is known by the name of Lipitor. It is produced by one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical company called Pfizer. Pfizer has released a series of television commercials for this drug, but the serious have brought along a lot of controversy and negative reactions. Robert Jarvik is a famous American scientist known for being the one who invented the artificial heart. In the serious of ads for Lipitor, Mr. Jarvik wears a white coat and explains the viewers that this medicament is capable of lowering the bad types of cholesterol by up to 60 percent. He claims that he uses the medications and implies that he also be might giving it to his children. The problem is that Mr. Jarvik is 61 so that renders him unqualified to practice medicine. After quite some time he admitted that he was not taking Lipitor at the time the commercial series were released. The series also showed him rowing in a boat, but he admitted that he does not indulge in such actions, so a stunt double with a rather impressive physique was used for those shots with a boat. The House committee of Congress demanded all the contractual details of the relationship of Pfizer and Mr. Jarvik and in the end they found out that he was paid 1.35 million dollars for the role in the ads. The controversy which surrounded the ads respawned the debate which dealt with the wisdom of advertising any drugs which are available only with a prescription. Such advertisements can only be found in New Zealand and the United States. Robert Jarvik did not see him as some kind of public enemy number one as he claimed that he is an advocate for the public and that the promotions in question are only an educational form of preventative medicine.
