Often a subject of controversy, plasticsurgery is still becoming more and more popular each year. Being moreavailable today than it was several decades ago when only actors andfamous people underwent the procedures, many regular people arechanging their lives with plastic surgery. Some changes of this typeare for the better and some for the worse. This is why plasticsurgery has two different applications.

Namely, it can be reconstructiveplastic surgery, which is designed and meant for correcting some ofthe inborn imperfections one might have. Some people are born withcertain abnormalities and this procedure grants them health bycorrecting these negative aspects of their body.

The other purpose of plastic surgery ispurely aesthetic, since it has nothing to do with the person's healthin some situations. This involves silicone breast implants, lipenlargement, tummy tucking and other methods of this type. These aremainly used as quick fixes for achieving the state of having all thenecessary aesthetic properties for being considered beautiful,matching the current beauty standards.

Regardless of the cause, people are accepting this type of surgery more and more and are willing toundergo some types of it, for various reasons. Surely, it can bemisused and it often is, but, essentially, plastic surgery is a Godsent branch of medicine for many people in need.

Art, Fashion or Medicine?

Many plastic surgeons consider thiscalling of theirs to be more than a mere medical branch. Rather, theyclaim that plastic surgery involves a certain amount of art since,after all, they are reconstructing one's body and important aestheticfeatures. This way, they are the agents of beauty and the plasticsurgery itself is the tool of divine properties.

They are capable of restoring one'sphysical looks after having an accident or suffer an injury.Also, plastic surgery can rehabilitate certain body parts, or enhancethem physically and aesthetically. All this has a great impact on thepatient's psyche since it makes him/her more self-confident and proudof his/her own physical appeal, which is a very important aspect ofone's personality.

However, every plastic surgeon needs toknow his/her share of science and medicine too. All these proceduresare far from simple and require years of studying as well asexperience in order to restore one's body to a perfect shape. Plasticsurgery studies last for about 6 years. During this period, futuresurgeons are taught how to treat burns, scars and how to performgeneral reconstructive surgery.
