Introduction

Fever blisters or cold sores are the very unpleasant and painful. They are blisters or lesions in area around the lip and the mouth. They are caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV), which can be found in central nervous system. It can be triggered by lowered immune system or stress.

Herpes simplex virus is contagious, and its spreads by sharing the same thins with infected persons like towels or toothbrush or through physical contact. Type 1 virus produces sores around mouth. Type 2 of herpes simplex virus more commonly attack area around genitalia of women and men. The affected areas tend to be red and burning and produce fluid when scratched.

In the first occurrence of virus outbreak, you should use oral medications. Usually, in the first occurrence of virus herpes simplex, symptoms are worse then with reoccurrence. In case of prevention, especially with reoccurrence of cold sores, there is a suppression therapy, which is to take daily medications like Valtrex, Acyclovir or Famvir.

Treatments for Cold Sores or Fever Blisters

There are many FDA-approved anti viral medicaments that you can use to heal your sore problems. There are also some other medicaments and treatments that are proven efficient in practice, but they are not FDA-approved. They all have one thing in common; they help you to heal cold sores more quickly. Among others, these therapies also help you to reduce the amount of viral shedding, decrease the time needed to heal your cold sores, reduce number and size of lesions, reduce symptoms especially pain and in some cases prevent new lesions to occur.

Right kind of diet is also very important in cases of cold sores. You should avoid salty and acid foods like grains, peas, seeds, chocolates, tea, coffee, peanuts and oatmeal. Vitamins are highly recommended especially vitamin E, C and A. garlic, zinc and iron are also needed in diet for cold sores.

You can try to apply warm tea bags fro a duration of 30 minutes directly on the blisters and repeat it every hour. Aloe Vera, lemon balm and witch hazel are some of homeopathic remedies recommended for cold sores problems. Another home remedy for cold sores is mixture of several drops of grapefruit seed extract and aloe vera or olive oil, applied directly to the blister or sores area.

You should also avoid touching your blisters area on your body, and if you do, always wash your hands afterwards. You should try to apply sun cream to affected areas and avoid sharing your personal belongings with anyone.
