Symptoms

There are many different symptoms that can show signs of oncoming seizures but they all depend on what part of the brain is affected.

Some seizures, however, can be pretty hard to notice, because the symptoms are rather subtle.

Some classic symptoms of seizures include changes in consciousness, forgetting things, emotional changes like random fear or panic, changing skin sensations over the extremities, changes in vision such as hallucinations, a loss of muscle control, muscle tension and strange, bitter tastes in the mouth.

These symptoms are usually fleeting and rarely last more than 15 minutes at a time.

Causes

Many things can cause seizures, such as drugs, withdrawal from drugs after using for a longer period of time, very high fevers, high levels of sodium or glucose in the blood stream, injuries to the brain, and even heredity.

Other common causes include brain tumors, brain lesions, traumatic brain surgery, strokes, quitting heavy alcohol abuse, dementia, congenital brain defects, a low blood sugar level, or kidney and liver failure.

Natural treatments

There are many supplements and herbal treatments that can be used to combat seizures.

Chamomile, licorice, skullcap and valerian root are herbs that can help a person avoid seizures by relaxing the nervous system. Taking these herbs twice a day for a week will help people who have regular occurrences of seizures. There also exists a 12-week herbal treatment than many people claim to be very effective against seizures.

In the first four weeks, minor bupleurum should be taken. This is a Chinese herb that will help to regulate and calm the nervous system. It could be taken twice a day after a seizure has occurred for the first week. After the first week, it should be taken once a day for the next three weeks.

It is important to note that if a high fever or acute infection is noticed in the patient, they should not be taking this herb.

In weeks five to eight, milk thistle should be taken. It is an herb that will help with protecting the liver. It should be taken once a day for these four weeks.

In the next three weeks, skullcap and oat straw should be taken. These herbs will calm the nervous system as well. One dose per day for an entire month is the prescribed dosage.

Another important thing to note is that these herbs should not be given to children who are under the age of six.
