Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease is a disorder which affects the nervous system. Parkinson's disease begins with a tremor in the hand and progresses slowly. In time, you may feel that you cannot move the limbs as before. Walking ability may be impaired, making it difficult to move the legs. Your muscles can become so stiff that they cause a lot of the pain. Any muscle in the body may be affected by Parkinson's disease, including the muscles in the face. If facial muscles get affected, you can develop speech problems and your face impressions will change. You may also have problems with balance and posture. In the most severe cases of Parkinson's disease you may develop dementia which can cause problems with memory and impair your ability to think normal.

Treatment

There is no cure for Parkinson's disease but the symptoms can be relieved with medications and remedies. There are a number of medications used in treatment for Parkinson's disease which can help you control the symptoms. In some cases the doctor may advise brain surgery which can be very helpful in preventing tremors. Physical exercises are very important part of the treatment. They will improve your overall health, but also they will help you stay mobile. Exercises can improve the strength and tone of the muscles. In order to relax stiff muscles you may have a massage. You can also practice yoga or tai chi, which will improve your flexibility and balance. Although, none of the exercises will provide the cure, they can improve the quality of your life and make you feel much better and confident.

Herbs

There is a variety of herbs and herbal remedies which can ease the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. If you decide on herbal therapy, you have to know that the positive effect will take some time. It will take weeks before you notice any changes. Herbs which are recommended for stiff muscles include licorice, red clover, rhubarb, magnolia bark and peony. Passion flower is recommended for tremors. Other herbs which have a positive effect on Parkinson's disease are ginseng, ginkgo biloba, hops, horsetail, valerian root, lemon balm, ginger root, dandelion root, hawthorn larkspur, lady's slipper and skullcap. You can also use supplements which contain vitamins B6, C or E and supplements which contain coenzyme Q10.

Diet

It is important to eat well balanced and healthy food. You should consume a lot of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and seaweeds. You must avoid drinking alcohol and coffee. It is not recommended to eat processed food and sugar.
