A menstrual cycle is a monthly cycle of changes in both the ovaries and the inner layer of the uterus, or the so-called uterine lining. Every such cycle ends with the shedding of that lining, and that is called menstruation. And while the cycle is called a monthly cycle, it does not necessarily have to last for exactly a month. Some women’s cycles come to an end every twenty days, while others’ last for about thirty days or more. The ending part of the cycle which is the menstruation is called a menstrual period and it lasts up to seven days. Only during the menstrual period is it impossible for a woman to get pregnant.
When do menstrual cramps occur?
There really is no rule as to who experiences menstrual cramps during the menstrual period and who doesn’t. Some women have the good luck to go through their period completely pain-free, while others may suffer quite a bit. Menstrual cramps are extremely unpleasant and annoying because once they take place, there really isn’t a comfortable position that might relieve them. The pain from the menstrual cramps is provoked by muscle contractions in the lower abdomen, and it usually happens at the very beginning of the menstrual period.
The way the cramps manifest themselves is completely individual. Some women may experience these cramps only for a couple of hours, while others may have to deal with them for a few days. Also, sometimes the pain is not too strong and it is rather bearable, but sometimes it can be incredibly severe and completely excruciating.
The cramps may also be followed by symptoms of nausea and vomiting, strong headache, exhaustion, lightheadedness, moodiness, or diarrhea.
What are the natural ways to relieve pain from menstrual cramps?
First of all, taking in a lot of vitamins is always recommended. Vitamins B, C and E are extremely helpful when dealing with menstrual cramps because they ease the pressure and also prevent the person’s mood from deteriorating due to these cramps.
Another natural supplement that is quite useful in these situations is magnesium or calcium chloride. It is very successful in reducing the muscle contractions and therefore, getting rid of the abdominal pain.
Finally, a mineral that is essential during a menstrual period is iron. Sometimes, particularly when a period is heavy, women tend to lose a considerable amount of iron which may eventually lead to iron deficiency. That’s why it is good to make sure to have enough iron in the system and avoid this unnecessary problem.
