Native Americans used cranberries for many purposes and they helped us to understand how beneficial cranberries can be for our health. Cranberries are used for the treatment of urinary infections, blood issues, and cancer.
Effects on the urinary tract infections
Urinary tract infections are extremely common among Americans, and women are a bit more affected than men. We usually use antibiotics for the treatment of these infections but the problem is that antibiotics do not always give the wanted results. In these cases, cranberry extract is a great solution for solving the problem. Bacteria which is called Escherichia coli, and which normally lives in the intestines, usually causes infection when they pass into the bladder. Substances found in cranberries have antibacterial effect and that is why they are helpful in removing these bacteria from the bladder.
Many researches have been performed on the significance of cranberries and cranberry extract in curing and preventing urinary tract infections. The results of these studies have shown that cranberries are good in preventing infections, curing them and helping those who have the problems with bacterial infection reappearance. Also, it is shown that the treatment with cranberry extract costs less that the treatment with the antibiotics.
Other benefits of cranberries
Cranberries are used to minimize brain damage caused by stroke. Brain cells are damaged because of the stroke and cranberries can decrease that damage and help the patient to be back on his feet again. While using cranberries in these cases, brain cells are not dying as they usually would.
As for the effect of cranberries on teeth, tooth decay is usually caused by Streptococcus and the cranberry extract destroys these bacteria. Cranberry extract is found to be effective in the treatment of the cancer. It stops the blood from entering the tumor so that the tumor does not have enough substances for further growth and development. Cranberries also work as an antioxidant and they help us to expel free radicals from our body. Cranberry juice, which can be purchased in stores, is not that healthy because of the additives it contains. It is much better to use cranberry extract than cranberry juice. Cranberry extract does not have any unwanted effects and everyone can use it, including pregnant women.
