Green tea is a beverage that offers various health benefits, mainly because of its high antioxidant content. Green tea is obtained from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, the same plant used to obtain black tea. The difference is that for green tea the leaves are plucked and steam-dried, in order to avoid fermentation and oxidation and to keep all the beneficial ingredients.

Brewing Green Tea

It is very important to brew the tea right. Green tea is best if used in form of fresh leaves, not in a tea bag. There are many varieties of green tea and each requires a slightly different brewing time and temperature. Still, the general rule is to use freshly boiled water that is allowed to cool down for two minutes, and to brew the tea from one to four minutes. Leaving the tea for longer will make it taste bitter.

It is recommended to use non-metal cups and teapots, because some of the ingredients in green tea can interact with metal and lose its properties.

It is estimated that the amount of green tea required for best results is from three to ten cups per day.
