First signs of twin pregnancy

The first signs of twin pregnancy basically resemble the first signs of pregnancy with only one baby. Still, even though women most commonly feel the same and develop almost exact signs in both cases there is a slight difference and some clues that may point to multiple pregnancy, to be more precise twin pregnancy.

What are Initial Signs of Pregnancy?

There is a whole variety of symptoms and signs of early stage of pregnancy. One of them is absence of menstrual cycle. But there are cases when women seem to have a sort of period during pregnancy. Morning sickness is another common symptom of early pregnancy. The very term 'morning pregnancy' is generally adopted although a pregnant woman may feel nausea throughout the day. For example, if a woman had in vitro fertilization she is highly prone to twin pregnancy. It is estimated that approximately 25% of women who have undergone in vitro fertilization (IVF) carry two babies. Women over 30 years of age are more likely to undergo in vitro fertilization hence they are prone to twin pregnancy.

Furthermore, a woman may assume she is carrying twins if there is a positive family history i.e. if twins run in family.

And finally, those women who have already had multiple pregnancy are potential moms of another set of twins. What are Physical Symptoms of Twin Pregnancy?

In women who carry two babies the symptoms and signs of pregnancy can be a bit more intensive. This can be explained by increased production of pregnancy hormones due to the presence of two living beings in the uterus.

Because of the mentioned twin pregnancy may cause more intensive morning sickness, extreme tiredness and frequent urination. Still, since very pregnancy is unique it is questionable whether the symptoms and signs originate from two babies or they would also occur with the same intensity if a woman was carrying only one baby.

Further progression of twin pregnancy is most definitely different from the pregnancy with only one baby. Weight gain is such women is rapid and the uterus becomes much bigger. The easiest way to confirm or rule out twin pregnancy is to perform an ultrasound of the uterus. And final confirmation may happen once double heartbeat is identified.
