There is no one type of eczema and people should know that it can develop anywhere on the body. Not all the symptoms and causes are the same for every type of eczema and people should get to know as much as they can about them.

Atopic eczema is one of the types of eczema and known for its tendency to develop several allergic conditions like asthma and hay fever. People who suffer from atopic eczema know that the main places where it occurs are the parts of the body where the skin creases, like back of the knees and front of the elbows. Apart from them, atopic eczema can occur on the face, chest and neck as well.

Irritant contact eczema is another type of eczema and it occurs due to frequent contact with certain substances that cause damage to the skin. Detergents are such substances.

There are lots of symptoms of eczema because there are various types of it. However, there are some signs that occur quite a lot. In case of atopic eczema a person may notice certain symptoms on the skin like redness or inflammation, dryness, cracks, itchiness and thickened skin.

Itchy rash is pretty common if eczema occurs on the knees or elbows. It is important that people do not scratch because that will only make the situation worse.

Treatment of eczema

Even though a lot of children suffer from eczema during their younger years, it is highly possible that the condition will resolve when they reach the age of 6. However, people should always watch out for various factors that may trigger eczema to occur. The first thing that a person can do is to make sure never to scratch because that will only make things worse. Keeping the fingernail short is very important. If the child is too young, parent should make them wear anti-scratch mittens. Running the skin with fingers helps a lot.

Even there is no cure for eczema, there are certain medications that will relieve inflammation and ease the symptoms. People should talk to the doctor about those medications.

Steroid creams, such as Hydrocortisone, are known to be good for treating eczema. Since there are creams with different strength, people should start by using mild ones.
