Modern, highly stressful life contributes to increase in number of patients with depression. Depression is an illness featured by low mood that can affect person’s thoughts, feelings, behavior and physical health. This emotional and physiological disorder is not just feeling of sadness but it affects the sufferer’s appetite, sleep, energy levels and everyday functioning. Due to depression there are also many suicidal attempts.

Depression is a chronic illness that requires treatment. It is commonly treated with antidepressant drug therapy along with psychotherapy. However, natural remedies can be successful too in treatment of depression.

Natural Cure for Depression

Depression and its symptoms can be effectively relieved with a naturally occurring substance that is found in several foods. It is abundantly present in nature and inexpensive remedy that medical science is beginning to study. The compound is nicotine in a safe, organic form. Although most people associate nicotine with cigarettes and cancer, it is actually non-toxic in a natural form. In fact, we consume nicotine almost every day since it is a part of the natural food chain. In trace elements, nicotine is present in potatoes, tomatoes, cauliflower, eggplant, chili peppers, bell peppers and some teas.

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center have proven the efficiency of nicotine in treating symptoms of depression. They conducted a study involving 11 people with depression and who did not smoke. The participants were assigned to wear either a nicotine patch or a placebo patch that did not include nicotine. It was found that those who used the nicotine patch for at least eight days had considerably reduced the symptoms of their depression.

How Nicotine Works?

Nicotine stimulates the areas of the brain that regulate our mood and state of mind. Depression results out of chemical imbalance in serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, which are neurotransmitters present in the brain. Nicotine acts by stimulating the release of these neurotransmitters and balancing them, thus improving the mood. Since the brain chemical imbalance also causes diseases such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, anxiety, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder and obesity, nicotine can be of help in treating these conditions as well.

Therapeutic Nicotine Products

There are different products already on the market containing nicotine. This includes: patches, inhalers, puffers, gums and lozenges. However, a new product that is currently being studied is nicotine water. This product provides the easiest way to ingest nicotine in a pure organic form as this water is purified and does not contain any chemicals except nicotine. More products are expected to enter the market, which can offer nicotine compound in a pure form because depression is a widespread problem.
