Common Cold

The common cold is a viral infection of the throat and nose. It is not considered to be dangerous condition, but it may have severe symptoms in the worst case. The symptoms of common cold include stuffy nose, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, coughing, mild headache and fatigue, mild pain throughout the whole body and slightly increased body temperature. More serious cases of the common cold include persistent fever, chills, sweating, headache, hoarseness, pain in the sinuses and swelling of the glands. This disease is quite common all over the world, especially in children.

Natural Remedies

There are a lot of home remedies which will help you deal with the symptoms of the common cold. An excellent remedy is ginger juice sweetened with honey. Take the juice in the morning and in the evening for optimal results. Another simple natural remedy is a betel nut tree leaf. Just take a few leaves and chew them. A cheap natural remedy is a powder made out of salt and pepper, which is mixed with warm water. For persistent common cold you can make a mixture of tulsi leaves extract, a bit of garlic juice and pepper. Put this mixture in a glass of water and drink it twice a day. For easing more severe symptoms of common cold, you can warm up a glass of milk and put some turmeric and jaggery in it. Another remedy is a glass of milk with some ginger powder. You can also put some roasted asafetida powder in your mild. Excellent natural remedy for pain in the sinuses and stuffy nose is a glass of yogurt with some black pepper. Take this remedy once a day for at least four days. Another remedy for similar symptoms is sniffing black pepper, horseradish or asafetida.

Home Treatment

If you have the common cold, you should have plenty of rest while you are sick. Rest will help your immune system fight against the infection. It is recommended to be in a warm and moist room, because cold and dry air will irritate your throat and nose. You should drink plenty of fluids every day and take vitamin C.


The common cold is highly contagious, so you should avoid contact with people who are sick. You should also protect yourself from cold and rainy weather. If you have sensitive throat, avoid cigarettes and cold beverages. Well balanced diet, regular exercises and healthy lifestyle will strengthen you immune system, so your body will be able to fight infections effectively.
