Hypotension

Hypotension is a condition where an individual’s blood pressure is lower than normal. Opinions about what should be called hypotension differ, but generally, every value below 90/60 is considered to be low blood pressure. There is a difference in how different people react to low blood pressure. Some of us may feel great, despite our blood pressure being low, while others with the same blood pressure value can feel exhausted and seek medical help.

When you feel quite fine, even though your blood pressure is low, you don’t have to worry. Only when you develop symptoms, you should consult your doctor.

Symptoms and Causes of Hypotension

The main symptoms of low blood pressure are vertigo, feeling that you are about to fall, and passing out. In some extreme cases, pain in the chest can also be felt. In addition to this, low blood pressure can affect kidney functioning and therefore, the amount of urea and creatine in the blood may be bigger than normal.

The reasons for hypotension are various. Low blood pressure can be the consequence of some medicines intake, such as drugs for high blood pressure, for some heart conditions, anxiolytics, antidepressants, and diuretic drugs.

Consumption of alcohol can also be the cause of low blood pressure. If someone is dehydrated, he or she may experience problem with low blood pressure. In those cases, person should drink lot of water.

There are some heart problems that can result in low blood pressure. You should talk to your doctor if you pass out when standing up. Also, if you are exhausted or experience weakness for a long time without any visible reason, you must talk to your doctor.

The aim of the cited study was to identify the differences in the frequency of non-specific complaints in young women with low and normal systolic blood pressure (SBP). The single-step research method was used. The target group included women aged 18-30. The women with acute respiratory viral infection and pregnant women were excluded from the research.
  • The normal SBP was assessed as the range of 120-129 mmHg and low SBP was the range of 61-99.
  • The symptoms, specific for low arterial tension were studied.
  • 1264 women were divided into two groups: those with low (n=91) and normal SBP (n=287). The study data were analyzed with Z-test.
  • The examination results showed a difference in the frequency of complaints among women with low and normal SBP, such as poor concentration (36% and 20%), acute weakness and dizziness in the morning (35% and 23%), apathy (37% and 11%), heaviness in the epigastric region and a bitter taste in the mouth, appetite loss, eructation of swallowed air, heartburn, flatulence and constipation (22% and 11%).

How to Treat Low Blood Pressure?

The treatment of each case of low blood pressure depends on what the reason of hypotension is. That is why it is important to talk to your doctor, so that he could tell you what the proper treatment is. There are some researches that showed the connection between vitamin C and low blood pressure. It was proved that high amount of vitamin C in the organism is connected with hypotension.

Another longitudinal study followed women’s blood pressure and levels of ascorbic acid in the blood for ten years. This study confirmed that there is a connection between blood pressure and vitamin C in the blood. Additional researches are necessary to reveal the essence of this connection.
