Byssinosis

This problem is associated with lungs. It is commonly created when a person breathes in the cotton dust, although dust from sisal, hemp or flax can also cause byssinosis. As for the most common causes, we have mentioned that the main cause is dust inhaling. This dust is mostly found in factories with textile processing. Problems that resemble those of asthma can be created because of the dust, especially among those who are sensitive.

In the beginning, the problems associated with the byssinosis come while being in the area with the dust and are gone when you return to your home. After some longer exposures, the problem may start to appear no matter where you are located. This problem can be prevented but it cannot be eradicated. It is still common in less developed countries. Long exposure can create wheezing, breath shortness and chronic lung problems. Smoking can increase the risks of this condition

The most common symptoms are cough, tightness in the chest area and wheezing. These problems will be worse when coming in contact with the dust, while they will improve when the dust is not in the surroundings. In order to see if the problem you are having is byssinosis, doctor will ask many questions about the problems you are having and about the medical history. He will also perform pulmonary function tests and chest x-rays.

Treatment for Byssinosis

Once the problem is diagnosed, the treatment may start. Logically, exposure to the dust must be eliminated. The reduction of the dust may bring some improvement, but in some cases patients will have to change jobs. If you are having byssinosis, smoking will have to be eliminated. It is important to include exercises, like breathing exercises. Corticosteroids and bronchodilators are medications given in these situations. Nebulizers, like all respiratory treatments, can also be used.

There are groups of people with the same problem and attending these groups may be a good idea. Resolving the problem may be possible, but only if the exposure to the dust is eliminated. Complications are possible and the most common one is chronic bronchitis.

Prevention

Preventing this problem may be possible, too. Measures like face masks and dust control may reduce the chances for byssinosis. Also, smoking should be avoided. The problem may become greater if the exposure to the dust continues. It can lead to disabling lung problems. Also, respiratory allergies and lung functioning problems may increase the chances for byssinosis. We can say that the best way of prevention is to prevent exposure to the dust. There are many ways the dust can be reverted and controlled, so that it does not affect the worker. Ventilation and exhaust hoods need to be used in order to achieve this.
