Bleeding during bowel movement is a condition that occurs in older people, as well as in young population. In the majority of cases, this bowel disorder typically occurs because of bad lifestyle habits.
Causes of bleeding during bowel movement
It is very important to establish the real cause responsible for the occurrence of bleeding during bowel movement. In most cases, the causes are not serious, but there are certain severe medical conditions that cause this disorder, such as, colon or rectum cancer. Therefore, the cause of this condition should be detected and immediately treated. Bleeding during bowel movement may be also induced by hemorrhoids, fistulas, diverticulitis, proctitis and colitis, as well as by fissures and protrusion of the rectum.
Hemorrhoids occur because of the excessive pressure on the walls of the rectum, which causes the swelling of the blood vessels in the rectal or anal area. Hemorrhoids may be external or internal and the external ones can be felt while wiping. When the hemorrhoids burst, they cause bleeding and the most common reason for the outbreak of hemorrhoids is a chronic constipation. Therefore, hemorrhoids usually happen in pregnant women.
The stool softeners are recommended for the threatening of this condition. Another cause that is responsible for the occurrence of bleeding during bowel movement is the forming of fistulas beneath the skin from the rectum to the skin around the anus. This condition is usually treated with antibiotics or other medications.
Diverticulosis is the medical term for the inflammation of the diverticula that forms in the walls of the bowel. Diverticula are tiny sacs that can burst and bleed. When diverticulosis is severe, the surgery is the only option. The inflammation of the rectum, medically called proctitis, is also one of the causes for the occurrence of bleeding during bowel movement.
Colitis, on the other hand, is the medical term for the inflammation of the colon and also may lead to bleeding. Ulcerative colitis is the condition when the inner surface of the colon is inflamed and full of ulcers. Chronic constipation or chronic diarrhea is the main reason for the occurrence of the anal fissures. In this condition, the inner lining of the anus is affected and torn, causing bleeding during and after bowel movement. Furthermore, rectal prolapse may also lead to the appearance of this condition, which usually happens with aging when the part of the rectum projects from the anus and bleeds.
