In order to detect certain complex types of tastes one needs to have a properly functioning sense of smell as well. This is why respiratory infections which are accompanied by a diminished sense of smell also trigger certain taste alterations as well. Constant bitterness in the mouth may lead to a severely reduced appetite. It can be caused by a wide array of different problems, reasons and factors.
Causes of Bitter Taste in Mouth
The main causes of a bitter taste in mouth are usually numerous different dental conditions such as mouth infections, tooth abscesses, gingivitis or various gum infections or diseases. Sensitivity to certain components in the tooth filling may also be held responsible for a bitter taste in mouth in some cases. Another common cause of bitter taste in mouth is a certain type of disease known as acid reflux or gastro esophageal reflux disease. It is characterized by stomach acids which leak back into the esophagus and trigger the annoying bitter taste. It is usually accompanied by a sore throat, nausea, gas, bloating, headaches, bad breath and heartburn. This disease is often connected with spicy and fatty foods and with overeating as well. There are also certain types of medicaments which can be responsible for the bitter taste in one’s mouth. Such medicaments usually come from the class of antibiotics or antidepressants. Low levels of estrogen in women and other hormonal imbalances may also be responsible for the occurrence of bitter taste in mouth. These changes may occur during pregnancy and sometimes even during a period. Bitter taste in mouth may also be associated with mercury poisoning, copper toxicity or lead poisoning. Certain types of diseases such as kidney malfunction, liver malfunction, cancer, diabetes and jaundice may also be held responsible for a bitter taste in mouth. Poor oral hygiene may also be one of the contributing factors to this unpleasant condition.
Remedies for Bitter Taste in Mouth
Proper tooth brushing, mouthwash and flossing are of utmost importance. Plenty of citrus fruits are highly recommended as well. One may also try out chewing on cinnamon and cloves on a regular daily basis, a few times per day.
