Low Carb Diet

Low carb diet is a diet with restricted carbohydrate and starch consumption, usually with a purpose of losing weight. Foods high in carbohydrates are replaced with foods high in proteins or fats. In the Unites States, approximately 37 to 42 million people, or 11% of the population, are on some sort of low carb diet. Low carb diet is increasingly followed due to growing problem of obesity.

Since low carbohydrate diet is nutritionally deficient, low car supplements are recommended to improve the results of the diet. Such supplements promote burning of fats by the body, enhance energy level and increase protein efficiency. Low carb supplements are good for keeping protein level high, they are very nutritious and widely available.

Low Carb Diet Benefits

Carbohydrates can be found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, milk products, but also in sugar and sweets. During digestion, the body converts carbs into sugar. High blood sugar level leads to high insulin level. Insulin uses certain amount of blood sugar to provide energy while extra sugar is stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles.

Following low carb diet insulin starts to use glycogen to provide energy. It is believed that decrease in carbohydrates leads to lower insulin level which causes the body to burn stored fat for energy.

Diet low in carbohydrates includes avoiding sugary drinks, chips and snacks to prevent gaining weight.

Disadvantages of Low Carb Diet

Carbohydrates are necessary to obtain energy, hence low carb diet may lead to weakness. Low carb diet supplements may sometimes cause bad breath, muscle cramps and exhaustion.

Since low carb diet may be high in cholesterol and saturated fat, there is an increased risk of heart attack and even some types of cancer.

To maintain normal brain functions, it is recommended to intake at least 150 grams of carbohydrates daily. Low carb diet usually involves only 20 grams of carbs per day which may have negative influence on behavior of a dieter.

Also, if your low carb diet plan involves limiting fruits, vegetables and whole grains, you may experience constipation and gastrointestinal problems due to insufficient fiber intake.

Vitamins and supplements must be key part of low carb diet to substitute for nutrients found in carbohydrates like vegetables and fruits. Protein powders provide required amino acids and can be found in several flavors. Also, digestive enzymes are good for helping the body to process amino acids.
