Many pregnant women have to deal with back pain particularly in the second and third trimester. Fortunately, there are several methods and assisting devices that may help a pregnant woman overcome this transitory problem. This type of pain usually affects women who have had problems with their back before the pregnancy. However, the pain may also affect previously healthy women.

Causes of Back Pain during Pregnancy

There are two categories of back pain in pregnancy. The first one is actual back pain that also affects women who are not pregnant i.e. the pain associated with factors that are not related to pregnancy. The second category of back pain in pregnancy is pain caused by the very pregnancy and is known as pelvic girdle pain. These two pains are treated differently.

The actual (true) back pain develops due to damage to different structures of the musculoskeletal system such as bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and cartilage. The pain is generally associated with injury, trauma or degenerative conditions. If a woman is suffering from these conditions she is most likely to continue feeling back pain during pregnancy.

On the other side, pelvic girdle pain is a direct consequence of pregnancy. Therefore, such pain is managed differently from the previously mentioned back pain. It is essential to mention that treatments which work in case of the actual (true) back pain are usually not effective in case of pelvic girdle pain.

Prevention of Back Pain in Pregnancy

One of the most effective ways to prevent back pain in pregnancy is to be as fit as possible before getting pregnant. Even if a woman gets pregnant it is not too late for her to start exercising. Normally, the doctor will recommend the extent of exercise program and the type of exercises that are generally allowed in pregnant women.

What Can Reduce Back Pain in Pregnancy?

Exercises represent one of the most powerful means of reducing back pain during pregnancy. It is good to consult a doctor or other well-experienced professional who will recommend specific exercises and the adequate exercise program. Swimming is, for example, very effective against back pain.

Furthermore, massage can efficiently sooth tired and aching muscles. Massage is also supposed to be performed by a trained massage therapist. Pregnant women suffering from back pain should maintain good posture and try not to slump when sitting. A soft or wedge-shaped cushion and a cushioned ring are excellent supporters when sitting. Additional help is obtained from maternity pillows and support belts.

And finally, if the pain is excruciating and lingers for certain period of time a pregnant woman is due to consult her health care provider.
