Vitamin B12 is a water soluble type of vitamin and it is commonly referred to as cobalamin. Unlike other water soluble vitamins, it can be stored inside the liver, for years in some cases. Vitamin B12 actually belongs to the family of vitamins normally referred to as the vitamin B complex. Vitamin B12 can be found in dairy products, milk, shellfish, meat, poultry, eggs, seaweeds and fermented soy products. Vitamin B12 deficiency is commonly related to various different types of symptoms which may or may not include weak pulse, abnormal heartbeats, dementia, weakness, lightheaded feeling, frequently occurring headaches, bleeding gums, sore throat, sore mouth, sore tongue, weight loss, appetite loss, tingling sensation in the toes or fingers, numbness in the fingers or toes, depression, anemia, diarrhea, canker sores, ataxia, coma and several other neurological abnormalities.
Vitamin B12 Overdose
Sometimes a person may suffer from vitamin B12 overdose, but that occurs only rarely, because vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin and it gets expelled out of the body rather easily. Vitamin B12 overdose may or may not be associated with esophagus cancer, stomach cancer, leukemia, vitamin B12 toxicity, transgression into different forms of cancer, tingling sensations in the extremities, abnormal functioning of the heart, headaches, a giddy feeling and improper functioning of the kidneys.
Side Effects of Vitamin B12 Injections
Vitamin B12 is sometimes taken in the form of injections. Side effects of vitamin B12 injections may or may not include mild diarrhea, upset stomach, painful sensations in the joints, headaches, feeling of nausea, warm feelings and painful sensation at the body part where the patient received the injection. These injections are commonly given to people who suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency, and they tend to be rather painful because they are injected in a muscle tissue.
Recommended Dosage for Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is one of the most important types of vitamins, but it needs to be dosed properly in order to avoid overdoses, deficiencies and all the harmful types of side effects. Toddlers up to 6 months of age require 0.4 micrograms per day, infants of 7 to 12 months of age require 0.5 micrograms per day, kids of 1 to 3 years of age require 0.9 micrograms per day, kids of 4 to 8 years of age require 1.2 micrograms per day, kids of 9 to 13 years of age require 1.8 micrograms per day, and persons who are 14 or older require 2.4 micrograms per day.
