Some Information about Stomach Ulcers
Stomach ulcers (peptic ulcers) represent defects in the lining of the stomach. They develop as a consequence of damaging effects of stomach acid. The mucous membrane of the stomach is normally protected with a thick layer of mucus. Under certain circumstances (intake of specific medications, inflammation of the lining of the stomach etc.) the inner surface of the stomach is no longer protected with this mucus and becomes exposed to detrimental effects of stomach acid. If this irritation lasts long enough the inner surface of the stomach is seriously damaged and ulcerations occur.
Stomach Ulcer TreatmentDietary RegimesPeople suffering from stomach ulcers must adapt their diet to the illness. Foods that are supposed to be excluded from one's diet include all the foods rich in fat, dry fruits, nuts, breads, crackers with seeds in top, certain cereals, corn, gas forming vegetables, broccoli, onions, cauliflower, cucumber, green pepper, citrus fruits and all types of berries. Meat, poultry and fish items that are highly seasoned must be avoided as well. Patients are also due to abstain from high fat milk, strong flavored cheese and dairy products made of whole milk. Other foods can be consumed moderately and the entire food taken during one day is supposed to be divided into three meals and three snacks. Medicamentous TherapyThere are several medications used in treatment of stomach ulcers. The first group includes antacids. These drugs can effectively neutralize stomach acid and allow the affected surface of the stomach to heal. H2 blockers and proton pump blockers are drugs which reduce production of stomach acid, hence reduce irritation of the already damaged portions of the stomach.
Patients whose stomach ulcers develop as a consequence of inflammation caused by helicobacter pylori require a combination of acid suppressing medications and antibiotics. This way the bacteria is eradicated and suppression of acid production allows mucous membrane to heal properly.
Prevention of Stomach Ulcers
People who are on prolonged therapy with certain medications are prone to stomach ulcers. This particularly refers to corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. These medications are highly potent and can easily lead to formation of stomach ulcers and this is why they need to be prescribed together with some acid suppression medications.
In some people stomach ulcers are associated with high level of stress. These people must learn how to relax and cope with stress particularly if they are exposed to stress on regular bases. And finally, cessation of alcohol consumption and smoking may be of additional help in prevention of stomach ulcers.
