About Proteins

Proteins areorganic substances made of different amino acids. Human body possesses enzymeswhich can metabolize proteins and use necessary amino acids. About 20% ofthe human body is made from various proteins, including our bones and muscles,but also our skin, hair and nails and every other cell and tissue of the body.

It is oftensaid that proteins are building blocks of the body. They are necessity, sincewe can’t build the muscles without proper amount of proteins. We wouldn’t beable to build any enzyme or hormone in the body as well, if there weren’t someproteins.

Human bodyis designed to use carbohydrates, fats and proteins to provide the energy foreveryday functions. Immune system also needs proteins to be able to protect thebody from pathogens.

Many believethat proteins are only found in the animal food. That is simply not true,because eating the food derived from animals is not the only way to provideplenty of proteins for the body. Vegetarians are also able to include variety ofproduct into the diet and experience all benefits of proteins.

Food Rich inProteins

Vegetarians andvegans may also eat food which contains large amounts of proteins. The list ofall product rich in proteins is quite long, but one should know that vegetablesin general have more proteins that the fruits, especially lentils, pulses anddifferent beans.

Vegetables suchas asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots and cucumbers containplenty of proteins and are suitable sources of these organic compounds for bothvegetarians and vegans. Beets, black eyes peas, celery, green beans, mushrooms,onions, potatoes and parsley are also found out to contain large amounts of vegetableproteins. Other vegetables, such as garlic, lettuce, tomatoes, sweet tomatoesand spinach are also excellent sources of proteins for everyone.

Eat moreavocados, bananas, cherries, peaches and grapefruit, if you want to includemore proteins in your diet. Apples, apricots, blueberries and pineapples mayalso be great choices, because these fruits too are rich in proteins.

Different nuts, such as peanuts or walnuts,raisins, rice, tofu, cornmeal, macaroni, noodles or whole wheat spaghetti shouldalso be welcomed at any vegetarian meal, since these products contain plenty ofproteins needed every day.

How Much ProteinsYou Need?

Adult peopleneed about 20 to 22 ounces of serving of proteins every day. Children and olderpeople usually need less than that amount and their needs are about 10 to 12ounces of servings of proteins per day.

Keep in mindthat growing children, teenagers and body builders need more proteins, so tryto incorporate some of the above mentioned vegetarian foods to their everydaymenu.
