Prostatitis is a certain condition which affects the prostate and it is pretty common among men who are young or in their middle ages. It is not an easy task for the doctors to diagnose this condition due to the fact that not every person will experience the same effects. There are a lot of signs of prostatitis. The most commonly seen are painful urination and incomplete emptying of the bladder. The problem is that these symptoms are also seen in some other diseases as well.
Prostate health is important
Prostate is an important part of the male reproductive system. This gland is not bigger than a walnut. There are two lobes or regions which make the prostate. Both of these lobes are enclosed by an outer layer of tissue. The location of prostate is right below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The prostate plays an important role in the male reproductive system as it aid in the process of making up of semen as sperm moves through during sexual climax. According to the data, there are more than 10% of all men who suffer from symptoms which are seen in prostatitis. Doctors mainly use this term to name an inflammation of the prostate but there are four different disorders which are described with this term. Acute bacterial prostatitis is the most uncommon of the four types of prostatitis but it can affect a person’s life. However, the good thing is that it is easily diagnosed and treated. The most common signs of this type of prostatitis are chills, fever, lower back pain and pain in the genital area and frequent urination. The second type does not occur often either and it is called chronic bacterial prostatitis. This condition occurs in situations when the bacteria find the spot on the prostate where they can survive. In most cases antimicrobials are used to treat the condition but they are not always effective. The third type of prostatitis is called chronic prostatitis or chronic pelvic pain syndrome and it is considered to be the one that occurs most often. However, it is important to known that not a lot is known about this type of prostatitis. There is no certain age at which men can get affected by it and the signs of it are known to go away and then return all of a sudden. The condition can be either inflammatory or non-inflammatory. In both cases no bacteria can be found. The last type of prostatitis is called asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis. A person suffering from this condition does not experience any of the symptoms like pain or discomfort but has the cells which fight the infection in his semen and prostate fluid. This type of prostatitis is usually discovered when the doctors are looking for something else, like the causes of infertility or prostate cancer.
How to treat prostatitis?
According to the experts, prostatitis is an inflammation and swelling of the prostate gland. There are a lot of causes which lead to this condition. It is important to know that if a bacterial infection is the cause, the situation is not that bad and it can be treated easily. However, there are some cases when the actual cause cannot be identified. This condition can occur all of a sudden but it can develop slowly over time. It all depends on the cause. It is not uncommon for prostatitis to heal on its own, without any treatment. Apart from the causes, there are certain risk factors which men should be aware of. The most commonly seen risk factors are already having an episode of prostatitis, suffering from an infection in the bladder, having suffered from a pelvic trauma, not consuming the right amount of fluids, having unprotected sexual intercourse, being diagnosed with AIDS, suffering from a lot of psychological stress or even heaving specific inherited traits. Once a person is diagnosed with prostatitis, the treatment plan can be made. In almost all cases of prostatitis, the condition is treated with the use of antimicrobials. If a person is diagnosed with acute prostatitis, it is considered to be common for him to remain in hospital for a period of couple of days. The main reason why that is so, is for the fluids and antimicrobials to be administrated with the use if an intravenous or IV tube. The person will need to continue with the consumption of antimicrobials for a period of either two weeks or a whole month. If the patient is diagnosed with chronic bacterial prostatitis, the treatment will last for a long period of time, in most cases for half a year. A person will be prescribed with a low dose of antimicrobials in order for the infection not to recur. However, men should know that antimicrobials are not effective in situations when the cause of the condition is not bacteria. If that is the case, the patient will have to find a treatment that helps with the help of a doctor. Making certain changes in the diet helps as well.
