Porcelain veneers are considered to be one of the best choices when it comes to beautification of your teeth. Namely, these veneers can give your teeth a natural glow, even if your existing teeth have been misaligned, chipped or stained.

Basically, the procedure involves placing a thin, porcelain shell over the surface of your tooth, allowing you to have a natural, beautiful smile. Unfortunately, not all people are suitable candidates for porcelain veneers and each potential patient needs to satisfy certain requirements.

Requirements for Porcelain Veneers

These veneers can only be placed on the teeth which have been stained naturally. However, these can also be placed on teeth which were stained due to cosmetic bonding procedure. Finally, porcelain veneers are capable of correcting minor chips and missing tooth parts, by bonding the shell with the tooth completely.

On the other hand, people who have decayed or unhealthy tooth should not opt for dental veneers, nor should people with gum diseases or those who lack greater parts of their teeth due to dental deterioration. Additionally, in order for the porcelain veneers to be placed on a tooth, it needs to have most of its enamel healthy and present on the surface.

The Process of Placing Dental Veneers

The whole procedure consists of two visits to the dentist. During the first one, he/she will remove about 0.5mm of your existing tooth enamel in order to place the veneer over it. Thus, the amount of removed enamel has to match the veneer since each one is created from a mold taken from your own teeth.

Once you visit your dentist for the second time, he/she will place the veneers on your teeth and match their color with your existing teeth. Alternatively, if you are placing veneers on all of your teeth, the dentist will have you choose the desired color or will suggest the one suiting you best. When all the preparations are done and the veneers are in their place, a special kind of light is used in order to make the veneers stick to the teeth and remain there.

Pros and Cons of Dental Veneers

The main advantage of these veneers is the fact that they closely resemble natural, healthy teeth, being translucent and allowing your real teeth to be shown once light passes through the veneer. This gives the teeth a lustrous appearance, making them shine bright and look healthy.

Additionally, porcelain veneers are extra resistant to stains and are thereby more than good choices for people who enjoy smoking or drinking coffee.

However, these veneers have negative sides too. Basically, they can get broken and may fall off. Unfortunately, once this happens, the situation can only be mended by creating another veneer since the existing ones cannot be repaired. Since your teeth surface will not look natural once the veneers fall off, you will need to place new ones as soon as possible. Otherwise, your teeth will be prone to decay and will be extra sensitive. Finally, price of the procedure it the main negative aspect, ranging from $900 to $1500 per tooth.
