Ocular rosacea is the chronic eye problem that can cause the irritation, burning and dryness of the eyes. This condition could also impair the vision and should be diagnosed and treated by a specialist doctor (ophthalmologist).

Symptoms

Symptoms of ocular rosacea may be associated with rosacea, also. If you experience itchiness, grittiness and redness of your eyes and inflammation of your eyelids, you might be suffering from ocular rosacea. Other symptoms may include vision problems and increased sensitivity to the light.

Exposure to heat or cold temperatures, sunlight, wind or high humidity might worsen the existing ocular rosacea. Patients also might found strenuous workout, emotional stress, alcohol, spicy food and drinks as triggers that negatively affect their symptoms. Menopausal women experience worse symptoms than all other groups of people.

Symptoms can be relatively eased by drinking plenty of water. If you drink enough water, your eye will also be more moisturized and the irritation won’t be that bad.

Treatments for Ocular Rosacea

There is no cure for ocular rosacea, but doctors usually recommend antibiotics to these patients. The most commonly used are tetracycline and doxycycline. These oral antibiotics should help and reduce theinflammation.

Along the antibiotics, doctors recommend eye drops, in order to produce more tears and ease the dryness of the eyes.

Additionally, you might want to try washing the eyelids. The recommendation is to press the warm wet cloth over the eyes for a few minutes and then use diluted baby shampoo and wash your eyelids (and especially corners of the eyes). Mild baby shampoo should clear your tear glands and unblock it, even temporary.

Always remember to remove your make up before bedtime. You can also use diluted baby shampoo for this purpose. Every 3 to 4 months replace your make up, to avoid accumulation and growth of bacteria harmful for your eyes.

New treatments for this medical condition include artificial tears (without preservatives), silicone plugs for the tear ducts or punctal cautery process (permanently burning of the tear duct opening).

Some recommend using omega 3 supplements. Three servings per week should improve the condition of your eyes, prevent further irritation and control the inflammation of your eyes.

You might also use some home humidifiers, to ensure proper moisture in your house.

Potential Harm

Untreated ocular rosacea might damage your eye permanently, especially cornea of the eye, leading to rosacea keratitis. Another potential problem can be permanent vision problem.
