Introduction
It is considered that certain amount of mucus in lungs is normal, but increased mucus in lungs can cause some difficulties that can interfere with the proper lung function. The primary role of mucus is to protect vital organs from dust and pollen. If something like that reaches lungs, an infection in the airways appears, as well as a cough, because our body wants to expel those foreign particles out.
Mucus in Lungs: Symptoms and causes
The most common symptom that indicates increased amount of mucus in lung is cough followed by greenish-yellow substance (mucus). Difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath and sore throat are also symptoms of mucus in lungs, though in most cases, excessive mucus in lungs is just one of the symptoms for some other disease, so it would be best to visit a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.
Factors that influence excessive amount of mucus in lungs are usually colds, infections, bronchitis, asthma, and sinusitis. Bronchitis occurs due to the swollen mucus membrane that is narrowed, which is why mucus begins to collect in the lungs as it is unable to pass through. Sinusitis is caused by bacterial infection resulting in mucus clogged sinuses.
Treatment & Cure
The treatment of mucus in lungs differs as there are more possible causes. If it is caused by nasal and sinus infection, then it is treated with decongestants that can be bought in every pharmaceutical store. If the conditions that cause increased mucus in lungs are bronchitis, asthma or COPD, then bronchodilators, cough suppressants, expectorants and steroids are used in the treatment. Inhaling steam is a home remedy that provides relief from congestion, but people who have asthma must avoid inhaling steam as it may worsen their condition. A few drops of eucalyptus oil can be suiting as well, and it should be added in the water while inhaling the steam. A loud and a very discomforting coughing caused by mucus that has moved up the throat can be prevented with salt water gargling. Mucus can be removed from the lungs by spicy food diet.
In general, if the mucus in the lungs is increased, it can be an obvious sign that there is some viral infection or a pulmonary disorder present. The cause of mucus gathering must be determined and diagnosed by a doctor so that he can give a proper treatment. If you start treatment on time, an excessive amount of mucus can be decreased.
