There are many myths related to eye diseases. However, it is important to know which stories are true and which are purely acts of fiction, in order to stay healthy and prevent any eye diseases from affecting you.

Myths about Eye Diseases

First of all, rest assured that dimmed lights will not damage your eyes. For centuries, people have read and worked under nothing but candlelight, preserving their eyesight without problems.

Secondly, spending a lot of time in front of the computer will not damage your eyes either. Yet, during this time, you are likely to blink less and cause your eyes to become dry and more prone to fatigue. So, take break often during your computer work and allow your eyes to recuperate. Also, keep the monitor away from your face, in a slightly lowered angle. If these factors fail to help, seek medical assistance.

Thirdly, wearing glasses which are not made for you will not damage your sight. But, in case of children younger than 8, the glasses should contain prescribed lenses in order to prevent the development of lazy eye.

Speaking of eye problems in children, they cannot outgrow crossed eyes or lazy eye. Rather, they can make the condition less severe by patching, surgery or some other methods.

Once children have vision problems, this does not interfere with their learning, causing any learning disorders related to reading, writing, mathematics or other skills. However, a child can benefit greatly from seeing properly, while treating learning disorders is a process carried out by special teachers and some other professionals.

Other Myths about Eye Diseases

Sitting close to the TV will not damage your child’s eyesight, even though this action can be a sign of some already existing vision problems. Also, eating carrots is not the only way of keeping the eyes healthy. Namely, there are plenty of foods in a well-balanced, natural and healthy diet, which contain vitamin A, preventing vision problems from ever taking place.

Keep in mind that, contrary to popular belief, your eyes will not get damaged by reading fine print. Rather, human eyes resemble a camera and, as such, their performance does not depend on what they are “recording”.

Wearing eyeglasses does not make you dependent on them. Rather, this only shows that you prefer clear vision over an unclear one.

Finally, there are certain eyesight correction myths that need to be brought out. Thus, cataract does not need to be removed only when it is “ripe”, but, rather, as soon as it appears. Additionally, contact lenses do not prevent worsening of nearsightedness and an eye, as a whole, cannot be transplanted yet.
