Erectile dysfunction and nutritional supplements

Introduction

Erectile dysfunction is one of the most common medical conditions because it is known for affecting a large number of people everywhere around the world. It is also sometimes referred to as impotence and it can easily be characterized as an inability to achieve and maintain normal penile erection required for a proper sexual intercourse. Impotence is not that accurate because it is actually a much broader term which could be applied to various other types of medical conditions and situations. There are two main different types of causes of erectile dysfunction. Those two types of causes are psychological and physical. Physical factors are the cause of 80% to 90% of all cases of erectile dysfunction, while certain psychological factors such as guilt, indifference to life, low self esteem, anxiety, depression and stress are held responsible for the remaining 10 to 20 percent of the cases of erectile dysfunction. The most common physical causes of erectile dysfunction include high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, multiple sclerosis, stroke, diabetes and various other sorts of neurological disorders, endocrine disorders and others. Certain types of medications can also sometimes be held responsible for the development of erectile dysfunction. Primary erectile dysfunction is a term used for men who cannot maintain an erection at all, while the secondary erectile dysfunction is a term used for men who gradually start having problems in maintaining the erection.

Diagnosis and Pharmaceutical Interventions

In order to diagnose the erectile dysfunction, the doctor needs to be well informed about the detailed history of the patient. Duplex ultrasound may be required in order to evaluate calcification of the erectile tissue, scarring of the erectile tissue, signs of atherosclerosis, venous leaks and the blood flow. Some cases may also require certain types of penile nerves function tests so that the doctor may be sure if there are any nerve sensation problems in the penis. There are certain tests which take place while the patient is asleep, such as the nocturnal penile tumescence.

Lifestyle and Dietary Modifications

It is strongly advised to quit smoking. Obesity may also be a serious problem when it comes to erectile dysfunction. L-arginine supplements may be of great help for all those who suffer from erectile dysfunction. The daily dosage for L-arginine supplements is from 1 to 3 grams. Up to 2 grams of Asian ginseng may also be very helpful in achieving and maintain the erection again. Other helpful natural remedies include gingko biloba, butea superba and tribulus terrestris.
