Introduction

The eyes are one of the most important organs of the human body. Through the eyes we get to see things in our environment that are absorbed through waves of light then put into signals that aresent to the brain, where they are recognized and understood. The images are created in the brain and thus we perceive the surrounding objects. The eyes have a very complex structure and they are comprised of many parts, so when any of these parts is affected by certain disorder or problem, it impairs the normal vision.

Common eye problems

Blepharospasm is the medical term for the eye twitching, so it is practically a blinking eye disorder, but it is not painful. However, it can be quite irritating. In most cases, eye twitching occurs due to constant exposure to stressful situations and due to nervous system disorders. Certain medications, Botox or surgery might be necessary for the treatment of this eye condition. Another common eye problem is itchy and watery eyes. This eye disorder has two main causative factors: seasonal allergic conjunctivitis and perennial allergic conjunctivitis. It is best treated with over-the-counter oral antihistamines and decongestants. Hordeolum is the medical name for the eye stye marked by the occurrence of small bump on the outside or inside the eye, which is caused by the blockage in the hair follicle of an eyelash. The main cause for the eye stye is staphylococcal bacteria, and this condition usually passes on its own within a week. However, it is recommended to use ointments, eye drops and warm compress in order to cure it as fast as possible. Astigmatism is also one common eye disorder when the person has problem to focus and the things in the surrounding appear blurred. The cause for the incidence of this eye problem is deshaped cornea, which makes two curves instead of one. Glasses and contact lenses are necessary to be worn when astigmatism occur. Conjunctivitis or pink eye is the inflammation of the membrane inside the eye. This membrane is called conjunctiva and thus the name of the condition. Eye drops and antibiotic eye ointments are used for the treatment of this eye disorder. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is the term for the dry eye syndrome marked by the insufficiency of the tears. Eye drops, or silicone plugs inserted in the tear ducts are the most effective methods for the curing of this eye problem.Other common eye disorders include cataracts or blurred and clouded lenses and retinal detachment where the retina separates from the choroids.
