Indigestion
Indigestion or dyspepsia is a problem that affects the majority of population. Almost everyone has suffered from it at one point. For people who normally have a healthy digestive tract, indigestion can be caused by overeating, or eating too much after longer periods of fasting, by eating spicy and greasy foods, but also by some emotional and psychological issues.
The most common symptoms of indigestion include nausea, vomiting, bloating, flatulence, and pain. People usually take antacids or similar medications to relieve the symptoms, but in case of chronic indigestion, that kind of treatment is not very effective.
Indigestion can also be a sign of an underlying condition or disease, such as stomach ulcer, pancreatitis or gallstones.
Indigestion treatment and remedies
The usual treatment for acute indigestion includes antacids and similar medications that regulate the acidity in the stomach. However, while this treatment can be very effective and quick to solve acute indigestion symptoms, on the long run, in case of chronic indigestion, one should aim for long term solutions.
There are many ways to cure indigestion naturally. It may sound strange, but changes in lifestyle can be of great help, especially for those who spend a lot of time sitting down. Yoga and physical exercise can be very beneficial for people who suffer from indigestion, and they also facilitate and regulate bowel movement. Breathing exercises can be very good too.
As for the herbal remedies, peppermint is the herb commonly used to solve indigestion problems. It can be used as a tea or in form of tablets. Adding some lemon to peppermint tea can increase its effectiveness. This tea works so well against indigestion because of its anti-inflammatory and gas-reducing properties. Other beneficial teas include chamomile, green tea and ginger.
Ground cumin can help with flatulence and pain associated with trapped gas, while seltzer water seems to be helping with general symptoms of indigestion.
Prevention of indigestion
Problems with indigestion can be easily avoided by following several tips and slightly changing one’s habits.
For example, losing a few pounds can prevent indigestion in obese people. Chewing the food slowly and thoroughly can help too, just like drinking plenty of water. Having one or two glasses of lukewarm water first thing in the morning regulates bowel movement and prevents constipation.
Indigestion is fairly common in smokers and people who drink too much alcohol, so cutting down on those two can make a big difference. Carbonated drinks, greasy food and artificial sweeteners should be avoided as well.
