If you are over 40 and have been TTC for more than twelve months, the chances are that you have already been in touch with your healthcare provider about the next step. While it is common knowledge that getting pregnant can take longer as your age increases, many women feel the need to commence fertility testing sooner rather than later. If you have already established that you could benefit from assisted fertility techniques, knowing that procedures such as IVF also have lower success rates for women who are older. Those under 35 have an overall IVF success rate of 30 to 35 percent, rates that dip to six to 10 percent for women older than 40. Don't let that figure intimidate you - this does refer to all women over 40, meaning those who turned 40 last month, as well as those in their 50s or even 60s.
That figure does tell you that, in order to achieve the best chances of getting pregnant, you need to find a fertility clinic that specializes in helping women over 40 get pregnant, for the procedure that you are planning. If you are going to try and get pregnant through intrauterine insemination (IUI), IVF success rates don't do you much good, and vice versa. The moral of the story is - choose a fertility clinic that understand your needs when you are aiming for success!
