It is normal that functions of many organs start to deteriorate as we age. One of the common problems in older people is urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence can be defined as any involuntary leakage of urine. Many people, both men and women, suffer from adult bladder control problem. Pelvic floor muscles are essential for the support of the urethra, bladder, vagina, penis, uterus and rectum. They are engaged in the process of urination and defecation. Once these muscles become strong enough the leakage of urine significantly reduces.

There are several things one should know about Kegel exercises.

Firstly, it is essential to determine which muscle needs to be exercised. This can be achieved by squeezing the muscles in the genital area as if one is trying to stop the flow of urine. This way the person gets familiar where the muscle that needs to be exercised is located.

Secondly, once the particular muscles are identified the person should tighten and hold them for about 4 seconds and then to relax. The whole process of muscle contraction and relaxation is supposed to be repeated for 10-20 times.

Thirdly, in order to achieve desirable results Kegel exercises must be performed at least 10 times a day.

The major advantage of these exercises is that they can be easily performed at any place. For example, one may do them at work, in a car while washing dishes or doing any other activity. However, one must pay attention and never perform Kegel exercises while urinating.

Positive effects obtained with Kegel exercises may be noticed after a few weeks but significant improvement may only occur after such exercises are performed on daily bases for 3-6 months. In case these exercises do not provide with desirable effect, a person suffering from an adult bladder control problem should consult a physician who will recommend more radical treatment.
