Acupuncture for back pain

The back pain is one of the most common causes of going to the doctor’s or visiting the pharmacy and seeking for an advice. All around the world, and in the United States, people need some time off work and some medications to solve their back pain problem.

The most common locations of back pain are lower back pain and the pain at the base of the neck.

What Causes Back Pain

Back pain might be caused by a variety of medical conditions. It could exist on its sown, when a patient experiences only back pain or it can be combined with some other symptoms. In some cases, the reason for the back pain can be a health issue located on completely different part of the body. However, because of the transmission of painful impulses via nervous system, the pain could be transferred and felt at the back.

It is estimated that 50% of adult people is experiencing back pain during their life. This is not a surprising fact, because the upright position of the human body puts pressure on the spine all human life and affects the muscles supporting the spine as well. Accidents, diseases, excessive physical activity or working and poor posture only add to the potential back problems, leading to the back pain.

First of all, we should explain a bit more about the back pain. It is said to be muscle pain in nature and exists as a pain cycle. Pain patient feels leads to muscle spasm, and that spasm may cause distortion of spinal discs, joints and nerves, causing even more pain. Then again, more pain causes even more spasms, and so on, progressively increasing the amount of pain patients been suffering from. If the pain and spasms become very frequent and severe, they might provoke transmission of the pain into the leg.

Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture is proven to help many people relieving and curing their back pain. However, it might not work for every single patient, and you should consult your acupuncturist before the start of the treatment, to be informed about the procedure and expected recovery time.

In general, acupuncture treatments are more frequent and last longer if the back pain is a chronic condition. Some acupuncturist will treat the back pain with few needles on one spot, and others will stack bunch of needles on different parts of the body. The treatment will depend on the severity and causes of the back pain.

Acupuncture can help to relieve the pain, by enhancing the production of natural pain killers (endorphins) and natural anti-inflammatory substances (steroids). The treatment will therefore reduce the need for the medications, and lead to fewer side effects because of that. It is known that people using acupuncture to treat the back pain need less time to completely recover. Also, these patients less often suffer from occurring chronic back pain. These treatments also reduce the possibility to undergo some invasive and expensive surgical procedures.

Acute back pain sufferers usually recover after 3 to 12 weeks, but for those who suffer from chronic back pain the recovery is not so easy or simple.
