Tinnitus is a condition which manifests through experiencing ringing, swishing or any type of noise being emitted from somewhere inside your head. This usually is a condition which comes and goes, bothering a person for a short while. However, there are cases where tinnitus severely affects people’s lives, being a symptom of something far more serious. In fact 36 million of Americans suffer from some form of tinnitus.

Causes of Tinnitus

Tinnitus can take place due to anomalies affecting one’s outer, middle or inner ear. Moreover, certain brain issues can trigger this condition too. Infections of the bones in the middle ear or the ear drum can also lead to tinnitus. Many people think that they suffer from tinnitus. However, they do not since the sounds they are hearing are normal sounds of their body which are always there but cannot be heard due to environmental noise.

Most commonly, however, tinnitus is triggered by damage in the microscopic nerve endings of the hearing nerve, which is located in our inner ear. This is likely to strike us as we age, since our nerves get damaged in time.

Exposure to loud noise may lead to tinnitus and so can certain medications like Aspirin. Alternatively, one may be suffering from some kind of a disease of the inner ear which can, then, result in tinnitus. One of the worst case scenarios is brain tumor or brain aneurysm.

How Can Tinnitus Be Treated?

Taking it easy on coffee and cigarettes, as well as salty dishes has helped many battle tinnitus and reduce its symptoms. Also, there are cases when this phenomenon is triggered by a zinc deficiency. Then, taking supplements solves the problem. Gingko Biloba has been considered to be an effective cure from alternative medicine. Finally, there are specially designed therapies which can help anyone overcome their tinnitus problem.

Prevention of Tinnitus

In order not to have tinnitus, do not place cotton swabs inside your ear while you are cleaning it. This action can push the earwax further inside, pressuring the eardrum, leading to this condition. Also, take blood pressure medications, if you have these prescribed for your health condition.

Finally, while handling noisy devices or when getting exposed to loud noise at work, protect your ears adequately, by wearing noise reducers or some other kind of hearing protection. Also, use this protection when you visit places or are involved in actions which may lead to foreign objects entering your ears.
